HONOLULU - Colleen Hanabusa, candidate for Congress in Hawaii’s First Congressional District, today released the following statement on her plans to move into the district if she is elected to Congress:

“While I am proud of my roots on Oahu’s Leeward Coast, and while it has been an honor to serve the 21st district in the Hawaii State Senate for the past twelve years, I have said since the beginning of this campaign that if the voters honor me by electing me to Congress, I will move into the First Congressional District.

“Serving in the Hawaii Senate does not allow for a narrow focus on the interests of a single district alone. I believe I have served my constituents well, but acting in such capacities as chair of the Senate Judiciary and Hawaiian Affairs Committee, Senate Majority Leader and, for the past four years, as Senate President, also calls for an understanding of the larger issues that affect our state as a whole. I am prepared to bring my knowledge of these issues and how they impact the First Congressional District to bear in serving a new, larger constituency. And I am prepared to do so from a residence within the district.

“I am confident that Charles Djou understands the process of refocusing on serving a new district, as he did the same thing when he went from serving Windward Oahu in the State House of Representatives to serving East Honolulu in the Honolulu City Council.”
